No surprise that Nestor is #TeamYanko during his Season 2 cancel culture storyline!
“He also talks about what fans would be surprised to learn about the making of the series.
With The Morning Show now streaming new episodes on Apple TV+, I recently spoke with Nestor Carbonell about what fans can look forward to on Season 2 of the Emmy-winning drama series. During the interview, he talked about the many things Season 2 deals with, how his character (Yanko Flores) is the subject of cancel culture, if he views Billy Crudup’s character (Cory Ellison) as a good or bad person, or does it depend on the day of the week, what fans would be surprised to learn about the making of the series, and more.”
Congrats to Nestor for Yanko’s profanity laden weather report to a fan on the sidewalk being included in TV Line’s Quote of the Week!
“Hey, Yanko! What’s the weather, man?”
“Well, the Earth’s gonna crash into the sun. But tomorrow night, you’re going to need a f—kin’ sweater.”
Meteorologist Yanko (Nestor Carbonell) has no patience for a fan who approaches him after a tough emotional moment
The Morning Show star Néstor Carbonell teases his weatherman character Yanko Flores spiraling into his dark side in Season 2.
As Apple TV+ continues to explore the dark side of television news media in Season 2 of its acclaimed drama series The Morning Show, things are poised to get even rockier for UBA news’s weatherman, Yanko Flores. Portrayed by Néstor Carbonell (The Dark Knight), Yanko has gone through the emotional wringer — from a recent breakup to a professional incident that will send him into a spiral while UBA faces both internal and external pressures.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Carbonell discussed the joys of delving into his character’s emotional struggle, reflected on his character’s darkly tinged monologue closing out Season 1, and teased what viewers can expect for his character in The Morning Show Season 2.
When we last saw Yanko at the end of Season 1, even apart from the catastrophic events at UBA, he was at a personal crossroads going through a big breakup and facing an existential crisis. How was it picking that back up going into Season 2?
Néstor Carbonell: It was six months in the timeline between Season 1 and Season 2 when we find everybody and we still find Yanko a mess. He still hasn’t recovered from Claire breaking up with him and he’s sort of in a puddle of sadness only for things to get worse for him when he unwittingly says something that offends someone in one of his weather broadcasts. And now he’s embroiled in potentially being canceled from his work. Things only get worse for Yanko in the best possible way for me as an actor. [laughs] His misery is my joy because, as an actor, that’s all you wish for, conflict and high stakes.
The actor, who is of Cuban descent, plays meteorologist Yanko Flores, who has to deal with the reverberations of a workplace romance.
Nestor Carbonell, who plays weatherman Yanko Flores in the hit Apple TV+ show “The Morning Show,” hopes that fans will still like his character in season two.
“I felt a lot of sympathy from women and men from the first season,” Carbonell told NBC News in a video interview. “I hope that’s the case in season two when Yanko steps into it and someone threatens to cancel him.”
Carbonell plays an endearing meteorologist who is committed to his work. But he’s romantically involved with Claire Conway (played by Bel Powley), a production assistant, in season one.
However, after Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) gets abruptly terminated for sexual misconduct as co-host of UBA’s “The Morning Show,” Carbonell’s character struggles to explain what he perceives as an innocent but complex relationship with the younger production assistant.
“He feels he may be judged by HR for being involved in a dynamic that is not appropriate and he feels completely innocent of that,” Carbonell said, “but doesn’t know how to explain it to them.”
For Carbonell, this stressful situation creates an opportunity for him to interpret a likable character who can represent ordinary people stuck in morally ambiguous situations.
“I think the key for him that’s interesting for me to play is that he’s a character that is underappreciated at work. And now, this season more so than ever, really misunderstood. Particularly by his own boss,” Carbonell said.
Season one was praised for the way it built up to a tough and shocking ending, showing the different angles around workplace gender and sexual dynamics, including sexual misconduct and issues around the #MeToo movement.
What an opening to Season 2, as we were anticipating we saw quite a few scenes with Yanko! One of my favorites was when he ran into Claire’s friend on the street which really highlighted he was missing her since her departure. He also added his usual poetic twist to the question how was the weather with the hilarious, “The earth’s gonna crash into the sun but tomorrow night you’ll need a f-ing sweater”.
‘The Morning Show’ star Nestor Carbonell spoke with HL EXCLUSIVELY revealed Yanko and Claire’s relationship will be ‘addressed’ in a way he ‘didn’t see coming’ in season 2.
When The Morning Show returns for season 2 on September 17, UBA weatherman Yanko Flores still hasn’t moved on from his breakup with Claire. HollywoodLife got EXCLUSIVE scoop from Nestor Carbonell about Yanko and Claire’s relationship in season 2 and whether or not these two will end up back together.
“In the first episode, we see Yanko still heartbroken,” Nestor told HollywoodLife during The Morning Show’s season 2 press junket. “It’s been six months, but it hasn’t been enough time. He deeply fell in love with this girl, and I don’t want to spoil it for the rest… for those who haven’t seen the season, but it will be addressed. That relationship is addressed, and it’s addressed in a way that I didn’t see coming.”
Nestor added that Yanko and Claire’s relationship continues to evolve in season 2 as the writers “bring up other issues between them that have nothing to do with the power dynamics of work or the age gap, for that matter. And I love that and I love that those issues come into play.”
In Nestor’s point of view, Yanko still has so much hope about being with Claire, going out on that romantic date, and making all the dad jokes. “Oh, Yanko is never going to stop seeing a future with Claire,” Nestor told HollywoodLife. “He’s always going to love her and whether or not they’ll have that relationship, we’ll see. Time will tell. But no, he’s got tremendous love for her. They were very compatible in many ways, even with that enormous… I’m sorry, slight age difference.”
